Darrin Rosenthal recently joined the Minitex Resource Sharing team, and is just getting his feet wet as he's diving right into all the various systems we lean on to get your Interlibrary Loan requests moving along. Darrin will be focusing heavily on verification of ILL requests, and will also have a hand in filling requests from the various campus libraries around the University. Let's give Darrin a warm welcome. Read further to find out a little more about him!
What first drew you to working in the library field?
I first started working in libraries in college, which puts me in good company here at Minitex. My first library job was helping to inventory and describe a very niche historical collection at a small university library. I think I was first drawn to the job because of the quiet workspace and flexible hours, but I grew to love the work and have been working in libraries ever since.
What do you enjoy most about working in Interlibrary Loan?
The wide variety of requests keeps things interesting, and I enjoy visiting different locations on campus and getting to know the collections. I like to think that with each filled request, I'm making a (albeit very small) contribution to someone's research or maybe just helping to improve their summer reading experience. Either way, I get to play a role in connecting folks to cool resources, and that's not bad way to spend my work day.
Favorite food?
It depends on the time of day, but I love Thai food and pretty much anything with chocolate and peanut butter.
Do you have a favorite place you've visited and is there a bucket list destination you'd like to travel to someday?
My favorite place to visit is probably Mesa County on the Western Slope in Colorado. You can go from snow-capped peaks to alpine forests to desert mesas with the Colorado River roaring by, all within a few miles. My short-term bucket list destination is to hike and camp on Isle Royale in Lake Superior. Someday I'd also like to visit the Southern Hemisphere to go stargazing; I think it would be wild to see a different night sky.
Give us a random fact about you that people may not expect.
Darrin: I grew up in Indiana and lived in Illinois and Colorado before moving to Minnesota, but I was born in St. Cloud, so moving here is a kind of homecoming for me.
