On April 30, Latino/x communities celebrate "El Día de los Niños" (which translates to “The Day of the Children”) a day to show appreciation for Children and all they do. Over time, the holiday has grown to include advocacy for children's health, well-being, and education (including literacy).

The second annual Minitex Connect starts next Tuesday and wraps up the following day. Along the way, attendees will hear from Minnesota's Commissioner of Higher Education and two incredible keynote speakers, storyteller Laura Packer and IMLS Senior Program Officer James Neal. Additional highlights include sessions on empowering youth, resource sharing, equitable hiring practices, and an update from the Office of the Secretary of State on changes to voting rights signed into law just last month. The Minnesota Author Project is a library-supported contest for self-published authors and community groups. The contest is accepting submissions for this year's prizes through May 31. Winners receive a $2,000 cash prize and their books are featured in an online collection and promoted in Library Journal and at Minnesota Libraries.
April is Hmong Heritage month! This is a time to recognize, acknowledge, and celebrate Hmong American culture as well as educate ourselves on the history and experiences of Hmong Americans. I visited Saint Paul's Hmong Cultural Center with my colleague, Zach Miller, to learn more.
