One particularly popular title is Clyde Robert Bulla’s Viking Adventure, the story of Sigurd - a young boy, raised for a rugged life, that does not initially understand all the lessons his father sets to him. A perilous journey teaches Sigurd many things, not least of all the wisdom and importance of his childhood lessons.
Bulla was a prolific children’s author, penning more than sixty titles. Born in 1914 near King City, Missouri, he passed in 2007 at age 93. Viking Adventure, published in 1963, is included today in multiple homeschool curriculums and is often used to explore subjects such as history, Scandanavia, the Vikings, and instructing young learners to value their education. The recommended reading level spans grades 2-5. This copy has circulated at least 33 times since arriving at MLAC and - at the time of this writing - is on loan yet again.
MLAC holds ten of the author's additional titles and two collaborations with Lois Lenski, all of which are loanable. Our cavern-mates - the University of Minnesota Archives & Special Collections - also hold a collection of Clyde Robert Bulla Papers consisting of "production material for twenty titles published between 1955 and 1994, including typescripts, proofs, notes, articles and photographs." These latter materials are non-circulating, but are available for public use in an onsite reading room.
