Quick Summary

Latinx library professionals play a crucial role in creating environments that promote knowledge, community, and inclusion. To honor and highlight these individuals, we are sharing their stories. This week’s story comes from Francisco Murillo, a Spanish-language programming assistant at the Northfield Public Library.

Body

In his role as Bilingual Library Assistant, Francisco helps members of his community navigate the library and find resources by helping to create a welcoming environment, especially for Spanish-speaking patrons.

Could you share a story where your cultural background helped bridge gaps or enhance the library experience for patrons?

When people in the Latino community in Northfield found out that I was a notary, they were relieved that they knew someone who could do that service.

How do you see your role in libraries impacting the Latinx community, and/or other underrepresented communities?

I feel like I make it easier for the library to be approached by the Latino community since I have that connection with them.

What would you like others to know about the importance of diversity and representation in libraries?

The biggest part is making them feel welcome, if they know someone who is like them they will then feel more comfortable when seeking resources.
