Quick Summary

Latinx library professionals play a crucial role in creating environments that promote knowledge, community, and inclusion. To honor and highlight these individuals, we are sharing their stories. This week’s story comes from Rafael Volkamer-Pastor, a Spanish-language programming assistant at the Northfield Public Library.

Body

In his role as Spanish language programming assistant, Rafael helps members of his community develop technological literacy while also helping them learn English to give them confidence in navigating their daily tasks. Do you have a Latinx library story to tell? Share it with us via our Google Form.

Could you share a story where your cultural background helped bridge gaps or enhance the library experience for patrons?

I had a student who didn't know what a resume was, how to apply for a job, or what references were. We sat down and we slowly worked through the entire job application. We ended up being able to apply and get a custodial job at St. Olaf.

How do you see your role in libraries impacting the Latinx community, and/or other underrepresented communities?

I help teach people how to speak English and use computers. This helps in job applications, day-to-day interactions, health care, and other important digital tasks.

What would you like others to know about the importance of diversity and representation in libraries?

Diversity breeds social growth, nobody wants a world full of clones.
