Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) president Jeannette Smithee presented Minitex director Valerie Horton with ASCLA's Leadership and Professional Achievement Award today at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans. ASCLA is a division of ALA.
ASCLA's Leadership and Professional Achievement Award is presented to one or more ASCLA members exemplifying leadership in consulting, library cooperation, networking, statewide services and programs, and state library development.
"During her tenure at multi-type, statewide consortia in Colorado and Minnesota, Valerie has continually brought creative ideas to the table that use the strength of cooperation to improve services to libraries and the people they serve," said Smithee. "She brings infectious enthusiasm to projects that draws libraries together to work collaboratively."
Greg Pronevitz, executive director of the Massachusetts Library System, also received ASCLA's Leadership and Professional Achievement Award. "This is a fitting pair," remarked Smithee. "Valerie and Greg co-edited and published a book on library consortia together."
Smithee also presented awards to Veronda Pitchford (Cathleen Bourdon Service Award), Gwinnett County Public Library's Removing Barriers Project (Library Automation System & National Organization on Disability Award), Pat Herndon (Francis Joseph Campbell Award), and St. Charles Public Library's Outreach Services Department (Exceptional Service Award).
