When I started a Google search for banned cookbooks, I was not sure anything would turn up besides "The Anarchist Cookbook," which is not what I want for a #FoodieFriday post. Why would anyone object to cooking? As this lizzyoungbookseller article informed me, because it was "capitalist propaganda!" So "A Gift To Young Housewives" was banned for much the same reasons as many of the other books on #BannedBooksWeek lists, but the freedom of thought and expression being censored happens to be tasty ingredients. The author, Elena Molokhovets, was well respected; she was considered the Russian Fannie Farmer. The book is not suppressed anymore, and you can find it at 19 of our member libraries.
