Last year at our “Living Banned Books” presentation at the MLA Annual Conference, we got requests for more costumes, so we delivered this year! We had six “books” (i.e., people representing banned titles) for attendees to walk around the room and visit. Each book gave information on its banning or challenges and then a medley of information from author biographies to short summaries, brief readings of the challenged portions, and even some fun activities and takeaways. The librarians representing the books were Heidi Southworth as Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage, Ramsey Turner (in absentia) as Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, Alyssa Inniger as Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Jennifer Hootman as Ray Bradbury’s  Fahrenheit 451, Jennifer Turner as The American Heritage Dictionary, and Anne Hatinen as Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games trilogy. The costumes included an armband with yellow star, a Civil war uniform, and bright green curly hair with colorful butterflies attached. Can you match the costume to the book?
