MNLINK uses a keyword search for the standard query option. The primary search will work well for most searches with a default range limited to the group of MNLINK libraries. Most fields are indexed within the WorldCat database, so providing an ISBN, ISSN, or OCLC number will return the result.

The advanced search may sometimes provide result sets with more precision. The advanced search is also useful for expanding the search beyond the group of MNLINK libraries, since all searches will intially default to the group setting. Users may change the location menu on the advanced search page to show results for libraries worldwide. Additional limiters are available with the advanced search for formats, dates, languages, audience, or combinations with specific search types beyond the keyword.
