Those of you that watched Superbowl 2023 may have heard Sheryl Lee Ralph sing "Lift every voice and sing," also known as the Black National Anthem. The Story of the Black National Anthem, part of the Freedom's Promise series, is available in Ebooks Minnesota. This book, written by Duchess Harris, looks at the history and writing behind this historical song of hope and praise.

Written at a 3rd-grade reading level with easy-to-read text and images, this book includes many ways to learn.  The text, including lengthy image captions, and side boxes on notable African-Americans, as well as links to online resources, make this book a great introduction to this topic.  As part of the Freedom's Promise series, discussion starters, and thought-provoking questions are included at the end of each chapter.

Aligned to Common Core Standards and correlated to state standards, The Story of the Black National Anthem, includes "fast facts," timelines, a glossary, evidence, perspectives, and influential voices that contributed to the importance of the song.  For example, Ray Charles sang it on the Dick Cavett Show in 1972 and Beyonce' sang it in 2018 at the Coachella Music Festival.  With many prompts and activities for writing, reading, and critical thinking, this book, as well as others in the Freedom's Promise series, makes a great addition to Ebooks Minnesota.
