Body

MN Book Award winner Karen Babine and finalists Bruce Kramer and Cathy Wurzer are available through Ebooks MN. These local writers’ latest works come from the University of Minnesota Press:

Water and What We Know: Following the Roots of a Northern Life, which explores identity, place, meaning, and memory, won an award for Memoir & Creative Nonfiction. The University of Minnesota Press describes Babine’s collection of personal essays:

“How does land determine what kind of people grow in that soil? In essays that travel from the wildness of Lake Superior to the order of an apple orchard, Karen Babine searches out the stories that water has written on human consciousness and traces an ethic of place, a way to understand the essence of inhabiting a place deeply rooted in personal stories.”

We Know How This Ends: Living While Dying delves into living with illness, loss, and death with meaning, and is a finalist in Memoir & Creative Nonfiction. The author, educator and musician Bruce Kramer, intertwines his story with broadcast journalist Cathy Wurzer’s own in this remarkable memoir borne out of their broadcast conversations and friendship. The University of Minnesota Press writes:

“Written with wisdom, genuine humor, and down-to-earth observations, We Know How This Ends is far more than a memoir about life with ALS. It is a dignified, courageous, and unflinching look at how acceptance of loss and inevitable death can lead us all to a more meaningful and fulfilling life.”

Ebooks Minnesota is a two-year pilot project of Minitex and State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education. The collection was made possible in part by funding from the Minnesota Department of Education through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and by Minitex.
