Minitex has recently added books published by Orca Book Publishers to Ebooks Minnesota. Orca is an independently owned Canadian children’s book publisher of award-winning, bestselling books in a number of genres. Their website states, "Our goal is to provide reading material that represents the diversity of human experience to readers of all ages. Orca aims to help young readers see themselves reflected in the books they read. We are mindful of this in our selection of books and have a particular interest in publishing books that celebrate the lives of Indigenous people. Providing young people with exposure to diversity through reading creates a more compassionate world."
The Orca books within Ebooks Minnesota include juvenile and young adult fiction and non-fiction. Many of the titles are considered hi-lo, or high interest, low readability, for struggling or reluctant readers. Ebooks Minnesota also includes a couple of Teacher Guides from Orca. For example, Speaking Our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation Teacher Guide, offers "comprehensive support for educators focusing on Indigenous teachings and looking to build an inquiry-based unit plan about reconciliation." If you're interested in taking a look at some of the Orca titles, I've linked to a few of them below:
