Learn at the Library: Veterans Day

This Veteran’s Day, please join Minitex in recognizing, celebrating, and honoring those who have served our country. Ebooks Minnesota and the Minnesota Digital Library (MDL) have various resources available to teach us about these individuals. 

Ebooks Minnesota offers books that explore the experiences of soldiers and veterans in the conflicts that have occurred throughout U.S history. Ranging from the American Revolution to the Civil War, World War II, Vietnam, and and through the Persian Gulf War all the way to the present day, these books show us what our nation's soldiers endured and overcame, and teach us about the importance of their efforts. 

The Navajo Code Talkers: Learn about a special unit of Navajo soldiers who were crucial to the war effort in World War II. This graphic novel describes the history of the Navajo people and how, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, they used their unique and unwritten language to communicate code that was nearly impossible to crack. Their efforts played a huge role in the Allies' victory.

Women in Combat: The contribution of women in American military service dates all the way back to the late 1700s, when Deborah Sampson enlisted as a male soldier in order to fight in the American Revolution. Many women followed suit since then, both recognized and in disguise. Their role has evolved from telephone operators to combat soldiers, and beyond, and has increased to this day. Learn more about these brave women who challenged the status quo and fought for their ideals in pursuit of freedom. 

Harlem Hellfighters: The Harlem Hellfighters earned their name from the German soldiers thy fought. They were the first African American unit formed in 1916 as a response to the American intervention in World War I. While widely opposed by the public, they went on to become one the most distinguished units, eventually spending more time on the front lines than any other group, and winning multiple honors along the way. Despite their commitment to serving their nation, they still faced segregation and were denied basic rights upon their return home. Their outstanding military service allowed for them to advocate for basic rights and helped lay the foundation for the Civil Rights movement. 

For a more local perspective, check out the Minnesota Digital Library’s “War Stories” exhibit series which cover the experiences and involvement of Minnesotans throughout the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War, available on the MDL exhibits page. They explore the experiences of Minnesotans throughout American military history, including local sentiments during times of war, and how communities shifted as a result. Firsthand accounts and sources such as diaries, letters, and photographs provide deep insight into our history, and showcase the bravery and resilience that characterize Minnesota.
