As we move through the Media Landscapes: 23 Things curriculum, let's continue to explore synthetic media, particularly the often difficult--sometimes impossible--to detect machine learning created deepfakes. Why should we be concerned about these types of deepfakes? Though these manufactured images, videos, and audio can be used for entertainment purposes, they can also be malevolent in intent, such as being used for:
- Phishing scams
- Celebrity pornography
- Reputation smearing
- Election manipulation
- Automated disinformation attacks
- Identity theft
- Financial fraud
Test yourself with some of the "Is it real?" quizzes (I missed so many!) linked in Thing 6, and learn how to better spot and call out these types of deepfakes as a guard against the spread of misinformation and harm.
