Body

To stay on top of current issues and trends in the library world, consider viewing one or more of the National Information Standards Organization's (NISO) webinars and virtual conferences. The webinars feature presenters who are experts in their field or who are on the cutting edge of implementing a new technology or standard. Minitex subscribes to the whole series, so the webinars and virtual conferences are available at no additional cost to your library. We provide access either through in-person group viewings or via archived recordings hosted on the Minitex MyLibrary portal.

The most recent NISO events that I have attended have been on the topics of digital preservation and linked data. The December 10 webinar, "Sustainable Information: Digital Preservation for Text," included a presentation about the helpful Levels of Preservation resource created by the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA). The levels are like a roadmap to help organizations build preservation services for digital content based on best practices. The other two presentations were about preserving the law at Georgetown University Law Library and implementing Ex Libris Rosetta at Binghamton University Library.

The December 3 virtual conference, "Connecting the Library to the Wider World: Successful Applications of Linked Data," included a keynote address about linking data and what it takes to make it happen, and presentations from seven different organizations that are using linked data. For anyone following developments in this area, you may have heard a lot about organizations publishing linked data (Library of Congress vocabularies, Getty vocabularies, OCLC), but if you have been wanting to hear more about successful implementations of using/consuming linked data, check out the recording of this virtual conference.

Library staff in the three-state Minitex region can view these archived recordings via the Minitex MyLibrary portal. Just log in to your account and click the "Archived Webinars from NISO, NASIG, ALA Editions" link. If you don't have a MyLibrary account yet, visit the Minitex website, look for the "login" link in the upper right corner on the page, and follow the steps to set up an account. Take advantage of this great resource!
