Rashida Jones is a multitasker that knows the benefits of prioritizing and taking breaks. In a recent issue of Wired she tackles cell phone withdrawal and optimizes her circadian rhythm to help focus and relax for a happier work day.

“We tried to follow another rule that said no emailing each other or the people on our team at night. Nobody could handle it. Now we’re just working on not immediately assuming that if you ignore an email you’re a lazy jerk.”

The article highlights four distinct areas where we could all find some useful tips to help us find happiness in the daily grind:

  1. Sharpen Your Mind
  2. Optimize Your Space
  3. Upgrade Your Tools
  4. Master Your Relationships

I would say, for me, 2. Optimize Your Space, has had the most noticeable effect on my work life and the ability to concentrate and feel harmony. Cutting out clutter on my desk gives me the sense that I can breathe a little better. I also find energy from socializing and discussing issues face-to-face with colleagues. Sometimes I need help working out an issue or knowing if others are dealing with the same thing. However, I have to disagree with one of the tips in 4. Master Your Relationships which states bringing work along on your vacation can make you have a more enjoyable vacation. Taking breaks from sunbathing or scuba diving and checking emails or doing other work-related thing can make you return to your lounging more refreshed. I’ve tried it before and I’ve had work things linger in my head and distract me from the scenery I’ve paid to enjoy. However, overall, these are really good tips for fostering a conscientiously healthy work environment.
