This comprehensive, 5-hour course, led by Dr. Michele Leininger, is designed to equip library staff without an MLIS with the essential knowledge and skills to succeed in collection development.

Paid for and facilitated by Prairielands Library Exchange and the Plum Creek Library System, this free course has been generously opened to all library workers in Minnesota.  Please note that while this course will benefit all library workers, it will have a public library focus.

Compliance with 134.51: Meets the new Minnesota Collection Development training requirements.

In-Depth Instruction: Dr. Leininger's extensive experience in library science and collection development ensures a comprehensive and engaging learning experience. 

Convenient Format: Two sessions online and an opportunity to meet in person for those in southwest Minnesota. Practical Applications: Learn to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios and enhance your collection development practices. 

Michele Leininger has worked for libraries in North Dakota, Pennsylvania, New York, Iowa, Washington and Minnesota since 1991. She received her MLS in 1994 and her PhD in 2014 from the University of Pittsburgh; she also received a BA in History from Carleton College. For most of her career, she has been a trainer and consultant on a variety of library topics, including reference, readers’ advisory, collection development and management, and was an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Information School for seven years. For the last nine years, she has been the Director of the Marshall-Lyon County Library.

Recordings may be made available, but there is no certificate related to recordings. You must attend the online live course to receive the certificate.  There may be future offerings of this course if the dates do not work for those interested.

School library collection development standards will not be covered in this course. The course would provide a solid foundation in collection development concepts, but will not provide qualifications to purchase materials for school and district collections, according to the Minnesota definition of a School Library Media Specialist
