Keynote Presentation
Greg Cram is the Associate Director of Copyright and Information Policy at The New York Public Library and he will be the keynote speaker for this year's conference. Greg endeavors to make the Library’s collections broadly available to researchers and the public. He is responsible for developing and implementing policies and practices around the use of the Library’s collections, both online and in the Library’s physical spaces. Greg has helped steer projects through a maze of complex intellectual property issues, including the release of more than 187,000 high-resolution images of public domain collection items. Greg has represented the Library in advocating for better copyright policy and has testified before Congress and the United States Copyright Office.
His keynote address will focus on the lifecycle of digital objects. Once digital objects are online, users want to know how they might be reused for their purposes. Answering this question in a responsible and helpful way has been a challenge that cultural heritage institutions are struggling with. Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) hubs have used over 87,000 unique rights statements to describe the copyright status, restrictions or permissions. To help provide a better and more consistent user experience, DPLA is implementing a limited menu of rights statements. This keynote will discuss the new statements and the broader implications of their use.
