Since July of 2013, I have been a member of the Mountain West Digital Library's Geospatial Discovery Task Force. This Task Force was comprised of 39 librarians and curators from a wide variety of our nation's universities, museums and libraries. As a group we were interested in managing geospatial metadata and describing an emerging international standard. The work was divided into three phases - and included an examination of existing standards, suggestions for actions that could be easily implemented, analysis of controlled vocabulary options, and an examination of formats for recording coordinate data. The final phase of the Task Force's work focused on the selection of the GeoNames database as the recommended controlled vocabulary and the development of a set of instructions on how to use GeoNames and format the metadata. The work of this Task Force will inform future directions for Mountain West Digital Library's partner organizations as well as the Minnesota Digital Library. In the coming months I hope to work with fellow MDL staff to discuss these recommendations and help facilitate their implementation into Minnesota Reflections.
