Body

In addition to my regular duties as Metadata Coordinator for the Minnesota Digital Library, I also currently serve as the Senior Co-chair for the Summer Educational Institute (SEI). SEI is an annual residential workshop jointly sponsored by the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF). Each summer SEI provides information professionals with a substantive educational and professional development opportunity focused on digital collections, metadata, and digital preservation. Essentially, the information needed to stay current in the rapidly changing field of visual resources and digital librarianship. SEI also provides a great opportunity to create and be part of a network of supportive colleagues.

Courses range from Intellectual Property, Metadata for Cultural Heritage Materials to Digital Preservation and Digital Collections Project Management. This year our instructors include Johanna Bauman (Pratt Institute), Euan Cochrane (Yale University), Martin Kalfatovic (Smithsonian Libraries), Marcia Focht (Binghamton University), Laura Hart (UNC), Julie Rudder (UNC), Justin Schell (University of Michigan), as well as the University of Minnesota’s own Nancy Sims.

I have been a part of the SEI implementation team for the past 2 years. During my first year I served as the Faculty Liaison and last year I was the Junior Co-Chair. I am now in my third and last year of this professional service opportunity - and I am the program’s Senior Co-Chair. These years have been both demanding and richly rewarding. I have been very proud to be part of a program that consistently delivers an outstanding experience for our attendees!

The location of SEI changes every other year, and this year we will be hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on June 7-10, 2016. We welcome attendees from all over the country as well as from all aspects of their career (from recent library school graduates to mid-career professionals looking to gain new skills). Interested in learning more? Check out our website or drop me an e-mail if you have any questions!
