I had no idea that Carter G. Woodson laid the groundwork for research and documentation of the history of Black Americans until I did a search for Black History Month in Student Resources in Context (SRC). Woodson became the second African American to earn his PhD in History. With continued hard work and perseverance he established the widespread acceptance of black studies. His work eventually led to the creation of Black History Month. You can find several biographies of Carter Woodson in Student Resources in Context.
SRC also includes “U.S. Census Bureau Facts for Features: Black (African-American) History Month,” from PR Newswire, which includes statistics on population, income, poverty, health insurance, numbers of blacks in military service, education, voting, families and children, and jobs. You can also view over 100 videos relating to Black History Month and over 100 audio files from sources like NPR’s Tell Me More and Weekend Edition.
I searched for an image of Carter Woodson in SRC but didn’t find one. However, I switched ELM databases and found the above image of him in Britannica School. Britannica School, as well as several other ELM databases, includes videos, images, and articles relating to Black History Month.
