Can a person be illegal? ¿Puede una persona ser ilegal? takes a look at the issue of illegal immigration, including how and why people immigrate to the U.S.  Part of the Racial Justice in America: Latinx American series, this title, as well as What is a dreamer? ¿Que' es un sonador?, look at issues specific to the Latinx community in a "comprehensive, honest, and age-appropriate way." Written in English and Spanish, these books share information on how the way we talk about political status affects lives in the Latinx community. Both books were written by Brenda Mendoza, an advocate and winner of the 2022 Latinx Educator Impact Award.

"What is a dreamer?" helps readers understand what a "Dreamer" is when heard on the news or media in their community. It explains how policy has shaped opportunities for American immigrants and looks at the history of the DREAM Act, which gave hope to many. It includes information on DACA, as well as what the future looks like. The author makes a point to highlight where many "Dreamers" are today. For example, Gaby Pacheco, one of the first DACA recipients, has become an advocate for immigration.

These books do a great job of teaching students about these prominent issues of our time. The author highlights that everybody can contribute by building self-awareness and knowledge and by being an ally and advocate.
