"The Song Poet" chronicles the experiences of the author's father, Bee Yang, and his Hmong family's life in Laos, their time in a refugee camp, and their struggles immigrating to Minnesota. The book won a Minnesota Book Award and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award as well as the Chautauqua Prize. The Saint Paul Pioneer Press called it "An elegantly written, moving testament to so many aspects of the human experience."
