University of St. Thomas seeks Director/Theological Librarian

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for University Libraries and the Dean of the Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity (SPSSOD), the Director/Theological Librarian is the chief administrator of the Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library (AIML). This position is responsible for managing AIML’s budget, personnel, and operations; for curating and building collections; and for innovating and enhancing library services and instructions. The Director/Theological Librarian will have a vision that integrates the spirit of Catholic School tradition. The Director must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of Roman Catholic theology, beliefs, and practices, and be willing to fully support the mission of the SPSSOD and the University of St. Thomas’s Catholic Identity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Consult and collaborate with faculty to ensure appropriate library services and resources are available to students; provide specialized library instruction and research consultations; teach theological and bibliographical research methods that foster knowledge of theology and religious studies.
2. Provide general reference services, including virtual reference to support all students and faculty; develop information and research aids such as subject guides, instructional videos, and online tutorials; assist faculty and students in the use of teaching and learning technologies.
3. Manage collections including assessing, selecting, and curating materials in all formats that support the mission of SPSSOD and in the spirit of Catholic Student tradition; collaborate with the University of St. Thomas Libraries in a shared and centralized online catalog with integrated interlibrary load and acquisitions resources.
4. Develop outreach activities to promote library programming, resources, and services; engage community organizations; sustain viable community partnerships.
5. Monitor the library budget to meet goals; supervise staff and establish performance standards and goals; review ongoing feedback to ensure that staff succeeds in their roles; maintain and report statistics with areas of oversight; keep SPSSOD and St. Thomas University Libraries administrators apprised of short- and long-term needs.
6. As an ex-officio member of the Graduate Studies Committee, establish, maintain, and implement AIML’s mission and collection policies appropriate to the curriculum and program of the SPSSOD; represent AIML as a member of the American Theological Library Association, the Minnesota Theological Library Association, and other resource sharing groups.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

• M.L.S. in Library Science from an ALA accredited Library School.
• Five years of professional level library work, preferably in a theological library and/or a college or university library. 
• Fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or eligible for legally required exemption such as a medical or religious reason.

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate degree in theology.
• Evidence of involvement in professional associations, (ATLA, CLA, ALA, ACRL, etc.)
• Knowledge of Latin, Greek, or Hebrew.

An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
