On June 1, the St. Olaf Libraries will assume responsibility for maintaining the 20,000-volume collection of the Howard and Edna Hong Kierkegaard Library. The Kierkegaard Library is owned by the college, but has operated independently since it first opened in 1976. Prior to that time, it was the private collection of Howard and Edna Hong. The library staff is in the process of assessing the collection to determine preservation (many of the materials are pre-1856) and cataloging needs.
The collection includes a complete replication of Søren Kierkegaard's personal library as well as titles he may have seen or owned before his death in 1855 and a vast array of additional materials including primary sources, dissertations, scholarly and newspaper articles, and more.
Howard and Edna Hong spent nearly 70 years translating the works of Søren Kierkegaard. Their work garnered the National Book Award in 1968.
