Robert Dawson, a photographer, spent over two decades photographing public libraries around the country. He just recently contributed a large portion of the pictures he's taken to the Library of Congress. Along with the 681 images, "the Library of Congress acquired his negatives, field notes, correspondence, maps, and other material". The American Public Library Project offers views of both the interior and exterior of libraries throughout the nation. Many of hiimages are not yet available online but you can view some of his library images at his website, http://www.robertdawson.com/index.html, and a few more here.
