John Helmer, the founding director of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, will retire from his post next March. The news release (PDF, 3 pages) about Helmer's retirement conveys his deep appreciation for his time with the consortium:

"The fun and excitement of working with Alliance teams and council is what drew me to this position to begin with, and oh what a fabulous ride it's been! I have enjoyed working with you so very much; please know that it has been a huge honor to serve as founding executive director of the Orbis Cascade Alliance."

Helmer became executive director in 1999 after serving as head of library systems at the University of Oregon. The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 academic institutions in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
