DESCRIPTION OF WORK

General Statement of Duties: Responsible for planning and coordinating outreach services and assisting the Library Director with the daily operations of the library and serving in the capacity of Director in his/her absence 

Supervision received: Under general supervision of the Library Director 

Supervision Exercised: Directly manages and supervises the Outreach Driver Librarian and Outreach Services Assistant. Assists in leadership and supervision of all library personnel, contractual employees, and volunteers 

Reports to: Library Director 

Department: Library 

EXAMPLES OF WORK 

  • Assumes duties of Director in his/her absence 
  • Assists in leadership and supervision of all personnel, contractual employees, and volunteers. Responsibilities may include coaching and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems. 
  • Assists with collection development 
  • Assists with coordinating building maintenance and repairs 
  • Assists with updating the library website 
  • Creates instructional materials for staff and public use 
  • Plans, coordinates, markets and supervises all outreach services 
  • Develops partnerships with schools, senior facilities, and various local agencies to determine outreach needs 
  • Develops three bookmobile schedules per year by coordinating dates and times to provide best use of sites’ location needs, departmental service, and vehicle continuance 
  • Oversees maintenance of outreach vehicles 
  • Maintains outreach statistical information 
  • Serves as passport acceptance agent; renews certification annually 
  • Serves as proctor for tests/exams 
  • Serves as liaison to the Friends of Morton Mandan Public Library 
  • Participates in activities of professional organizations, networks, conferences, and workshops to maintain knowledge of new developments in the library profession 
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and Experience: Requires a four year college degree, ALA-accredited Master’s degree preferred and a minimum of 3 years of library experience with 2 years of management/supervisory experience. Proficiency in public contact work and computer skills. 

Required knowledge

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn the Dewey Decimal System 
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn the library’s ILS 
  • Knowledge or ability to learn applicable laws, regulations, rules, and library policies and procedures 
  • Knowledge of proper grammar and the use of English in speaking and writing 
  • Knowledge and proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Publisher), use of library data systems and databases 
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes identifying customer needs, meeting standards for service and customer satisfaction. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of reference tools, research skills, general literature of basic library principles, procedures, technology, goals, and philosophy of services 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library management 
  • Knowledge of city and county government 
  • General knowledge of technology as it affects library operations

  • Must possess a valid Class D North Dakota Driver’s License, a clean driving record is required 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift and carry 30-50lbs on a regular basis 
  • Ability to exert 50lbs of force 
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend 
  • Ability to reach, stoop, squat, crouch and push 
  • Ability to push, pull, or otherwise move objects 
  • Ability to climb, balance, kneel, crawl, pull and sit 
  • Ability to sit and drive 
  • Ability to ascend and descend steps while carrying 30-50lbs 
  • Ability to push and pull library book trucks weighing 100-300lbs 
  • Ability to load and unload bookmobile in a variety of weather conditions 
  • Ability to use close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORK CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet and typically will not require shouting to be heard above the ambient noise level. Duties require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, and talking or hearing. Duties require occasional periods of climbing or balancing, pulling/pushing items, lifting/carrying items, keyboarding, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Weights up to 50 pounds are encountered. Vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Work, such as emptying the outside book drop, or loading and unloading personal vehicles or the bookmobile, may be performed throughout the year and is subject to conditions such as high or low temperatures, rain/snow, or slick walking surfaces. Reading materials and verbal instructions require complex interpretation. Hazards are considered minor and controllable, but may include exposure to human error and angry/hostile humans. Must be able to transport oneself to work-related meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. 

Required to work in close quarters – 8’ x 20’; possibly without heat or air conditioning. No immediate access to restrooms when on the bookmobile.
