The Minnesota Judicial Branch, State Law Library currently has an opening for a part-time librarian in the Law Library Service to Prisoners (LLSP) program. Under an Inter-Agency Agreement between the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) and the Minnesota State Law Library (MSLL),  LLSP provides law library service to inmates incarcerated in Minnesota or otherwise under DOC jurisdiction. The LLSP librarian   provides legal information services to inmates by responding to written request and online. The work involves responsibility for performing a wide range of professional library tasks and may involve providing work direction to paraprofessionals, interns or volunteers. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of a Library Division Supervisor.  

This part-time, permanent position is classified as a Librarian.   Work will be performed predominantly during normal business hours, Monday through Friday and is based out of the State Law Library located at the Minnesota Judicial Center in St. Paul, Minnesota and within State Correctional Facilities.  The Minnesota Judicial Branch offers a comprehensive benefits package. Example of Duties

The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform:

  • Research and respond to legal information requests received from inmates through written requests, by phone, and during in person or online visits to the prisons. 
  • Create standard responses for frequently asked questions and ensure that they remain current.
  • Compete Public Services projects – 5 hours per week.

Typical Qualifications

Any combination of education, training, and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below will be considered.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an approved four-year college or university supplemented by Master’s degree from (or current enrollment in) an ALA accredited program.
  • 2 -3 years of experience working in a library, a related field, or conducting legal research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with legal research.
  • Ability to effectively work with marginalized communities. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting legal research.
  • Experience working with marginalized communities.

ANTICIPATED HIRING SALARY RANGE:  $25.72 - $32.78 per hour ($26,852 - $34,222 annually)

FULL ANTICIPATED SALARY RANGE: $25.72 - $39.83 per hour ($26,852 - $41,583 annually).  Starting salary will be based on the selected candidate's level of experience and related skills.
