Macalester College’s DeWitt Wallace Library seeks to hire a Research and Instruction Librarian for the Fine Arts and Humanities. This position provides research and instruction services, participates in our first-year course library instruction program, and collaborates with faculty on assignment creation in relation to course-integrated library instruction goals. The person in this position helps support and develop digital scholarship research and projects as part of our cross-campus digital liberal arts team. In addition, the individual in this position is active in outreach efforts and works closely with our academic community to ensure that library research and instruction services most effectively support college curricular and scholarly endeavors. The ideal candidate will be service-oriented and enthusiastic about teaching, collaborating, and fostering student success in a liberal arts environment. This position is a member of the Access, Instruction, & Research Services (AIRS) team and reports to the AIRS Associate Library Director. Key components of this position are as follows:

  • Consults with and assists faculty, students, staff and others with their research needs; provides in-depth research and consultative services.
  • Collaborates with faculty to plan and deliver library instruction in formal classroom settings.
  • Evaluates technological advances and innovations and assesses implications for research methods, information literacy, and digital scholarship.
  • Participate in developing and managing collections that are diverse in format, perspective, and subject area in order to support our current curriculum and community’s needs and interests.
  • Takes initiative to identify and facilitate ongoing communication and to build relationships with stakeholders within the Macalester community on matters related to the library, our services, trends in the profession, and other areas of expertise.
  • Stays informed of trends in academic libraries and higher education and shares new knowledge and ideas with library staff, the campus, and the broader library community.

Required 

  • Masters in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or from a program in a country with a formal accreditation process as identified by ALA.
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience.
  • Relevant familiarity, experience, or background related to the fine arts and humanities subject matter.
  • Teaching and instruction skills and experience.
  • Familiarity with best practices and trends in academic librarianship and scholarly communication.
  • A desire to work in an undergraduate student-centered environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.

Preferred

  • Demonstrated understanding of principles and best practices of information literacy instruction, such as designing learning activities, curricular mapping, integrating the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, or measuring student learning outcomes.
  • Familiarity with assessment techniques.
  • Degree in a humanities discipline in conjunction with Masters in Library Science.
  • Experience with digital humanities or digital liberal arts.
  • Understanding of instructional technology applications.
