Stewart Van Cleve, Winoa State University, presented on creating impactful tutorials and provided step-by-step instructions as well as suggestions for tools that will help you get your message across. He shared information on what is good to know before getting started with tutorials, software and equipment that will help create more professional-looking tutorials, planning out your list or tutorials for the coming year, best ways YouTube can help with hosting your videos, best practices for creating your tutorials, and lessons learned.
Some helpful notes I took away from the session: When thinking of creating tutorials, think of creating a series of tutorials with a starting trailer followed up by 10 tutorials that each answer a top question that users routinely ask such as How do I reserve...; Where do I access...; What do I do if the library doesn't... Keep in mind that a 5-minute video can require more that 2 hours of post (editing) work. And all videos should be reviewed annually for accuracy. With the creation of a tutorial series, it's helpful to be consistent with theme. Make sure you include a title card introducing that tutorial topic and an end card that includes a link to social media and library/librarian contact information.
