NDSA announces the Levels of Digital Preservation 2.0
After over a year of hard work, the Levels of Digital Preservation Working group announces the Levels of Digital Preservation 2.0! In 2018 the NDSA sent out a call to the larger digital preservation community asking for interest in updating the Levels of Preservation. Response was high – 125 individuals responded! NDSA then convened the Levels of Preservation Working group, which divided up into subgroups to tackle the many areas the community wanted to see addressed in a Levels Reboot.

The National Digital Stewardship Alliance launched its Levels of Digital Preservation guidelines in 2013 as a set of recommendations for how organizations can begin to build or enhance their digital preservation activities.
Minitex introduction to digital preservation virtual course offered
While many of the traditional resources found in libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions--books, photographs, objects--can survive for years with no intervention, digital content is much more fragile. Managing it requires ongoing care and preservation activities to ensure continued access far into the future. This online training series--based on the Library of Congress Digital Preservation Outreach and Education (DPOE) Program curriculum--introduces fundamental concepts for managing your digital content over time through a series of six modules delivered in three sessions.
New report: The Future of Email Archives
As mentioned in the report description "email is an increasingly important part of the historical record, yet it is particularly difficult to preserve, putting future access to this vast resource at risk." The Future of Email Archives: A Report from the Task Force on Technical Approaches for Email Archives delves into what makes archiving email complex and presents several potential solutions with sample workflows.
NDSA publishes new report on file monitoring practices
The National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) Fixity Survey Working Group announced the publication of the 2017 Fixity Survey Report. A common practice in digital preservation management, fixity checking is the act of reviewing digital content to make sure that it has not changed over time. Though an abundance of tools and methods for fixity checking exist, up to this point, there have been no established best practices. To better understand the common practices and challenges that exist for fixity checking, the NDSA Fixity Working Group published a survey in fall of 2017.
Preservation tips brochure now available
Last year we created the brochure Preservation Tips for your Photographs, Documents, and Digital Content to hand out at Minnesota Digital Library (MDL) Scan for Keeps events and other select events. We've had requests from libraries to make this brochure more widely available so that they can order copies to give out to patrons.
Doubleheader at the 2018 Library Technology Conference
On March 14th, 2018, attendees of the annual Library Technology Conference at Macalester College in St. Paul will be able to see not one, but two presentations by DIME staff. Digital Preservation Day at the Library will feature Sara Ring and Lizzy Baus and Molly Huber and Greta Bahnemann wil present Minnesota Digital Library: Today and Tomorrow.
Staffing for Effective Digital Preservation 2017: An NDSA Report
The National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) released Staffing for Effective Digital Preservation 2017: An NDSA Report. This is a follow-up to a 2012 survey on the same topic. The report investigates how 133 organizations staff and organize their digital preservation functions, and points out any changes from the 2012 survey. If your organization is in the beginning stages of establishing a digital preservation program, or if you're looking to ramp up and improve your existing program, this report may help!
