DPLAfest 2019 Call for Proposals now open

DPLA is seeking proposals for DPLAfest, a gathering that will explore how libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural organizations across the country leverage technology to serve, inform, and empower communities. They invite proposals that showcase projects, ideas, and solutions designed to help the field meet the technological, social, and civic demands of the 21st century and that highlight the critical role of libraries—and the DPLA network—in shaping the future of access to digital knowledge. The deadline to submit a session proposal is Friday, January 11, 2019.

The 2018 Upper Midwest Digital Collections Conference (#UMDCC18) will be held on November 8-9th at St. Catherine University campus, St. Paul, Minnesota. The planning committee is working hard to finalize a great program and plans to open registration after Labor Day. In the meantime, here is more information about the program and cost to attend.

Keynote announced for 2018 Upper Midwest Digital Collections Conference

We’re excited to announce that Abigail Potter from Digital Innovation Labs at the Library of Congress will be the keynote speaker for the 3rd Upper Midwest Digital Collections Conference, to be held on November 8th-9th, 2018 at St. Catherine University, St. Paul, Minnesota.

2018 Lake Superior Libraries Symposium program summary

I learned about a unique and brand new library in New Kid on the Block: How a Museum Opened a Library. Archivist Ryan Welle walked us through the steps it took to organize and open a new library at the Minnesota Military Museum. The Minnesota Military Museum is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1976 and is located at Camp Ripley, Minnesota’s National Guard training facility. While the museum started collecting library materials in 1989, it wasn’t until 2014 that the museum board voted to make the collection more widely available to the public. The library officially opened it’s doors to the public on May 24, 2018.

Carleton College's 2018 Day of Digital Humanities

On Friday, June 1st, Carleton College hosted their third annual Day of Digital Humanities at the Weitz Center for Creativity in Northfield. Carleton's Day of DH is a regional conference meant to highlight the work of those engaged in digital scholarship in the upper midwest. MDL Outreach Coordinator Molly Huber was one of the morning's lightning round presenters, speaking about MDL's new initiatives including the addition of geospatial metadata to Minnesota Reflections, the creation of primary source sets, and the implementation of standardized rights statements.
