Minnesota Digital Library staff contribute to new OCLC Research Report
Greta Bahnemann (Minitex) and Jason Roy (University of Minnesota Libraries) are two of the authors of the new OCLC Research report on the CONTENTdm Linked Data Pilot project’s findings. The report outlines “the benefits of working in a linked data environment, the potential to develop a shared data model, and the challenges facing efforts to transform metadata into linked data.”
New webinar on Wikidata
Last chance to register for the Minitex webinar all about Wikidata, taking place on Monday, April 13. Presenters Lizzy Baus and Sara Ring will demonstrate how libraries are using Wikidata, an editable knowledge base for structured data. This is a reworking of a presentation originally planned for the cancelled 2020 Library Technology Conference.
New OCLC Research Report: Creating Library Linked Data with Wikibase
OCLC Research published the report Creating Library Linked Data with WIkibase: Lessons Learned from Project Passage. The Wikibase prototype dubbed Project Passage provided a sandbox in which librarians from 16 U.S. institutions (including the University of Minnesota Libraries) could experiment with creating linked data to describe resources without having to necessarily know the technical underpinnings of linked data.
CLIC Conference recap: Artificial Intelligence, Creative Design, and Libraries
On April 23, Lizzy Baus attended and presented at the CLIC consortium's annual conference. This year the theme was Artificial Intelligence, Creative Design, and Libraries. All the speakers were well-received, and participants left the conference ready to think differently and explore new ideas.
Guest webinar: Linking to the Future: the University of Minnesota and the Linked Data for Production Project
Linked Data for Production (LD4P) is a multi-year, Mellon-funded collaborative project to create infrastructure and best practices for the creation, migration, and discovery of library metadata in an RDF-based format. For phase 2 of the project, the LD4P partners issued an open call for libraries to join a cohort that will begin to produce linked data in a sandbox developed in cooperation with the PCC (Program for Cooperative Cataloging). The overarching goal of this phase of the project is to move closer to actual cataloging production workflows, and to begin in earnest the long-discussed transition from the MARC record. The University of Minnesota Libraries’ successful proposal focuses on the cataloging of artists’ books and fine press materials.

Minitex Technical Services Symposium handouts available
Over 75 library staff attended the inaugural Technical Services Symposium that was held on December 6, 2017 at Metropolitan State University, Saint Paul campus. Some of the speaker handouts are now available on the Minitex website. After hearing good feedback from attendees, we hope to offer more Technical Services Symposiums in the future. Highlights from Amigos Innovating with Metadata virtual conference
My colleagues and I attended the November Amigos virtual conference Innovating with Metadata. The conference opened with a keynote address by Amanda Sprochi about the new International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Library Reference Model (LRM) and how it will have a major impact on RDA (Resource Description and Access). While there were several breakout sessions to follow, I would like to summarize one in particular: Analyzing Linked Data From and SEO Perspective. For several years I’ve been following developments in library linked data. This is one of the first speakers I’ve heard that analyzed library linked data from a search engine optimization perspective.
