A trip to Denmark, partnerships with the University of Minnesota and St. Catherine University, and careful planning by library staff have yielded a successful extended-service-hours program in Scott County.
This week I visited the East Lake Library, which first opened in 1924 before relocating to its current location in 1976. The library works to provide access and address the needs of the Longfellow and Phillips communities.
When Dakota County Library's branch in Farmington is open, its staff creates programming and provides in-person service that are valued by the community. When it's closed, self-service hours extend access to the library by a whopping 71 hours per week. Patrons love the combination.
Highland Park Library is Saint Paul Public Library's busiest branch, and its neighborhood is growing rapidly. Branch Manager Mary Knox and her staff have made their library into a thriving community hub, enabled by efficient operations. Highland Park's programming highlights include a weekly Amharic Story Time, and much more.
Roosevelt Library offers high-quality programming, a refurbished interior, and, most importantly, a friendly library staff to its visitors. During the school year, those visitors are likely to be students from Roosevelt High School, which stands directly across the street.
April is Hmong Heritage month! This is a time to recognize, acknowledge, and celebrate Hmong American culture as well as educate ourselves on the history and experiences of Hmong Americans. I visited Saint Paul's Hmong Cultural Center with my colleague, Zach Miller, to learn more.
