Curious about copyright and rights status as it applies to digital collections? Want to learn more about the standardized rights statements developed by rightsstatements.org? RightsStatements.org statements are a simple, standardized system of labels that more clearly communicate the copyright and re-use status of digital objects to the public. The Minnesota Digital Library is working with organizations around the state to share information about these statements and how to apply them to items in their digital collections. Even if your organization does not have a digital collection, knowing more about rights statements can help you know how to engage with digital resources as a user, or share that information with other users such as library patrons.

This morning session and optional afternoon workshop provides the opportunity to learn more about the standardized rights statements developed by the international collaborative rightsstatements.org. RightsStatements.org statements are a simple, standardized system of labels that more clearly communicate the copyright and re-use status of digital objects to the public. Adding these labels to your digital collections will improve usability and access for users, and the Minnesota Digital Library is proud to participate in this initiative by facilitating implementation of rights statements from rightsstatements.org in Minnesota Reflections.
MORNING sESSION
9:00 am - 12:00 pm The day will be broken into two parts. In the morning, the presenters will review and share examples of how rights statements can be used and applied in Minnesota Reflections. You will be introduced to the MDL Rights Review workflow document that illustrates an approach to determining which rights statements to associate with a digital object, as well as other tools for implementing the statements in your digital collection. There will be opportunities to work through general examples as a group.
AFTERNOON WORKSHOP (OPTIONAL)
1:00 - 3:00 pm The optional afternoon workshop will be spent working together to develop comfort and skill at applying rights statements to examples in your own collection. If you are a current contributor to Minnesota Reflections, you will be provided with a spreadsheet of your collection records that you can start working on immediately. If you are not a contributor, you are still welcome to work through examples from your own collection with the assistance of the training team.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Though preference will be given to Minnesota Reflections contributors, this workshop is open to any organization who is interested in learning more about implementing rightsstatements.org statements in their digital collections.
REQUIRED PREREQUISITES
We ask that you watch the two introductory rights videos available on our website before the class and workshop. Each one is about thirteen minutes long and will give you an overview of what you need to know before we convene as a group.
