You may not see much from Reference Outreach & Instruction during the month of January. That’s because we are out in the schools. In cooperation with University of Minnesota Libraries and Minnesota History Center’s History Day Team Minitex ROI librarians are busy prepping students for their History Day visits to the U of M’s Wilson Library and other research needs. Actually, our History Day instructional visits have been in full swing since November but January is the crunch time for the research phase. Providing students with research skills instruction and using ELM to find primary and secondary sources gives them the edge on the competition.
Minitex ROI librarians also provides Train-the-Trainer instructional sessions to librarians at school and public libraries. Many public libraries host History Day Hullabaloo events designed to bring students in for research assistance. Tutors can also be available at Hullabaloo events to help with thesis statements, bibliographies, and more.
This year’s theme is Exploration, Encounter & Exchange in History. Each year the National History Day organization based out of College Park, MD, creates a theme designed to “provide an opportunity for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective and understanding.”
