The University of Minnesota Libraries invites applications for a full-time 12-month, continuous-appointment Cartographic Metadata Librarian. The successful candidate will provide leadership and coordination for cartographic resource cataloging/metadata held by the University of Minnesota Libraries, including the John R. Borchert Map Library, and will contribute to and collaborate with the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geospatial team to create and maintain metadata for the Geospatial Project. In addition, the position will assume primary responsibility for developing policies, procedures, and manage workflows for original and copy cataloging of cartographic resources. Metadata librarians work with the Director of Data Management & Access in coordinating metadata projects, training and mentoring support staff within the unit, and writing documentation. The Cartographic Metadata Librarian will also participate in Libraries-wide efforts, such as digital library metadata development and contribute to the knowledge base of the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement, while working toward continuous appointment status. 

Position Responsibilities 

  • Lead cataloging efforts for the complex copy and original cataloging of sheet maps, atlases, GIS datasets, etc. 
  • Create and maintain metadata, in collaboration with other team members, for the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geospatial Data Project. 
  • Design, implement, and manage workflows for original and copy cataloging of cartographic resources. 
  • Propose, write, and maintain local cataloging documentation and workflows relevant to cartographic materials. 
  • Supervise cataloging library assistant (1.0 FTE). 
  • Engage with partners within the Libraries, across other University of Minnesota system campuses, and with consortial partners to advance cataloging and metadata activities, especially in regard to cartographic materials. 

Qualifications

An American Library Association accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience, one year minimum original cataloging experience using current cataloging standards and tools (Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARC21, Library of Congress Classification and Library of Congress Subject Headings), experience with principles of authority control, including selecting and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing, experience creating and delivering clear and effective oral presentations, experience working with diverse groups of people, and experience working both independently and in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative environment. 

This is a full-time, 12-month, continuous-appointment track, academic professional position with probationary appointment at the Assistant or Associate Librarian level.
