Understanding that information creation is a process is a key component of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy. The more researchers can understand how research is produced, the better equipped they are to make informed decisions about that research.
Understanding that information creation is a process is a key component of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy. The more researchers can understand how research is produced, the better equipped they are to make informed decisions about that research. John Oliver, the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight parody news program, offers librarians an assist in this instructional endeavor with a recent episode on scientific studies.
The episode humorously details aspects of the scholarly publishing process as well as how the outputs from that research are sometimes (mis)handled by non-scholarly publishers and media. On the listserv where I picked this up, a number of librarians shared how they plan to use the video in their instruction – including displaying snippets in class and assigning it as “pre-class reading.”
The episode is 20 minutes long and contains mature content, but take a look if you think your students might respond to an acerbic, funny take on this important info lit topic.
