Session 3: Describing Families

In this session we will explore how families are described in authority records. We will consider how RDA theory impacts recording information about families as creators, contributors, and subjects of works or expressions. We will discuss core elements, and access points to consider when recording a family name, preferred name, or variant name. We will understand which sources of information are important for decision making about family names. We will discuss different attributes of family names including dates, places, hereditary titles, language, history, prominent members, and more. We will practice how to look up rules in RDA for doing name work with examples and exercises.
