In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) issued an update to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), establishing clear guidelines to ensure that digital services provided by state and local governments are accessible to individuals with disabilities. This includes public libraries, state libraries, and academic libraries within public institutions. For libraries serving populations of 50,000 or more, the deadline for compliance is April 24, 2026.
Accessibility not being everyone's strong suit, and factoring in the added legal concerns, means libraries have many questions about accessibility and how to comply with the new rule, such as:
- What is WCAG 2.1 AA?
- Which library content is in play and which is exempt?
- Are there remediation tools for non-experts?
- What actions can my library take to get started?
- How can we start proactively producing accessible OER, web pages, and PDFs?
- Who decides if my library is compliant?
This session will provide a brief overview of key issues before opening up for discussion. If you would like to contribute to the overview, help lead the discussion, or present an experience in detail, please get in touch. These conversations are meant to foster learning, dialogue, and the exchange of ideas and strategies. You’re welcome to join at any point during the hour, though registration is required.
Minitex Conversations offer an informal space to engage with Minitex staff, ask questions, deepen your understanding of a topic, and connect with colleagues.
