ACRL 2021 Recap

I recently attended my first ACRL (Association of College & Research Libraries) conference, which was held virtually in April. The conference theme was "Ascending into an Open Future," and packed with great content over four days. Many of the presentations I attended were excellent, thought-provoking, and aspirational. I will carry the information and ideas discussed with me for a long while. Here are just a few highlights from the presentations I attended.

MLA 2019 Annual Conference recap

There were some great sessions this year at the Minnesota Library Association Annual Conference, which took place at a new conference venue, the Mystic Lake Center in Prior Lake, Minnesota. I learned more about Hennepin County Library's latest digitization projects and ever-expanding community-based archival collections, racial equity programming and collection management initiatives at Ramsey County Libraries, how to incorporate equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in library catalogs, options for LIS work abroad via the Fulbright Specialist Program, and more about libraries building relationships with Native community partners.

SDLA 2019 Annual Conference recap

I had the pleasure of attending the South Dakota Library Association Annual Conference in Spearfish. Like the beautiful landscape surrounding it, I found the conference engaging and inspriring. The first day I presented a preconference on linked data developments in libraries, and the room was full of staff from school, public, and academic institutions. Between presenting and hanging out at the Minitex booth, I attended some great sessions, and had the chance to hear ALA President Wanda Brown speak during a keynote session.

The theme of this year's Lake Superior Libraries Symposium was Sea Changes in Libraries, with a keynote address by John Pateman on Blue Ocean Strategy.

Highlights from Amigos Innovating with Metadata virtual conference

My colleagues and I attended the November Amigos virtual conference Innovating with Metadata. The conference opened with a keynote address by Amanda Sprochi about the new International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Library Reference Model (LRM) and how it will have a major impact on RDA (Resource Description and Access). While there were several breakout sessions to follow, I would like to summarize one in particular: Analyzing Linked Data From and SEO Perspective. For several years I’ve been following developments in library linked data. This is one of the first speakers I’ve heard that analyzed library linked data from a search engine optimization perspective.
