Body

In 1986 the city of Golden Valley, a first-ring suburb west of Minneapolis, celebrated its 100th anniversary. The Golden Valley Centennial Committee published a 168-page book titled “Golden Valley: A History of a Minnesota City” in honor of the major anniversary.

This book includes chapters on early settlement, schools, library, churches, community development, government, public services, recreation and social organizations, business and industry, future directions as of 1986, and an essay called "Golden Valley Remembered." The book’s end pages also feature an 1888 map of Golden Valley that identifies plots of land and property owners.

The Minnesota Digital Library recently digitized this valuable local history resource for our newest contributing organization, the Golden Valley Historical Society (GVHS). The mission of GVHS is to find, preserve, and disseminate historical knowledge about the city of Golden Valley, Minnesota. GVHS collects photographs, text documents, oral histories, multimedia materials, and three-dimensional objects. In 1997, GVHS acquired the city's oldest church building as a permanent home, where it maintains its archives and collections.
