The Minnesota Digital Library recently digitized, transcribed, and uploaded 12 bound volumes recording the proceedings of the Common Council for the City of St. Paul from 1880 through 1891. They join other records of city history in the Saint Paul Public Library’s digital collection.
Early St. Paul, like many cities in Minnesota, was governed by a Common Council of elected city aldermen. The work of this council was documented in handwritten meeting minute books, which also included records of city elections, city bonds, the work of the city clerk, treasurer, comptroller, engineer, chief of police, and more.
The Minnesota Digital Library (MDL) recently added a set of 12 bound volumes of the Proceedings of the Common Council from 1880 through 1891. They are part of the Saint Paul Public Library’s collection, and they are now much more accessible to anyone through MDL’s website. All of the books have been transcribed so the content from each meeting can be read easily.
These meeting minute books join several other valuable records of St. Paul’s history, including maps and atlases, reports from the Board of Park Commissioners, blueprints and photographs from library construction projects, and issues of “The Library Beacon” newsletter.
