Warroad Co-Operative Creamery with new addition, Warroad, Minnesota
Body

The Minnesota Digital Library is pleased to share new images from the Roseau County Historical Society. These black and white photographs depict creameries located in the towns of Warroad, Ross, Roseau, Greenbush, and Strathcona between the years 1900 and 1931.

These photographs document the creameries located in the towns of northwestern Minnesota during a time when the dairy industry operated at the local level. Later, the dairy industry would shift to an organized cooperative network. Farmers organized local cooperatives to combat the low prices of milk and dairy products and the inconsistent practices of private buyers. By 1935, Minnesota had 876 butter plants, of which 635 were cooperatives.
