Body

Southwest Minnesota State College (SMSC) was founded in Marshall, Minnesota in 1967. The college was renamed Southwest State University (SSU) from 1975-2003 and, in 2003, it became Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU).

The Striegel Archives at SMSU recently contributed a set of booklets to the Minnesota Digital Library (MDL) on the early years of the college from 1969, 1970, and 1971. They document the history of the institution and highlight work being done in the Academic Affairs, Administrative Affairs, Student Affairs, Public Services, and Development areas of the college. The booklets include data on the college’s students, faculty, funding, and impact on the communities of southwestern Minnesota.

There are also several photographs of staff and students on campus in each booklet. They illustrate the variety of opportunities the young school offered students, including sports, music, dance, the arts, scientific research, new technology, and a fully-stocked library. Browse through the booklets for a snapshot of what life was like for the first students of this college:
