The state of Minnesota is divided into 87 counties, each with unique people, places, and histories. The Minnesota Digital Library has digitized photographs, papers, and recordings from all 87 counties. Examples from each county are now available in a new set of StoryMaps developed by MDL staff.

This collection of StoryMaps highlights the history of Minnesota’s counties – from Aitkin County to Yellow Medicine County. Ever wonder the story behind your county’s name, or when it was founded? These maps can answer those questions.

The six regional maps also feature one item in the Minnesota Digital Library from counties in the northwest, northeast, west central, east central, southwest, and southeast parts of the state. Each StoryMap also contains links to more content related to these counties for further exploration.
