Minnesota educators and library professionals will have an opportunity to deepen their media literacy expertise this fall when the Minnesota Council of Teachers of English hosts a full-day workshop with nationally recognized media literacy educator Dr. Renee Hobbs.
The Minnesota Council of Teachers of English (MCTE) Fall 2026 workshop, Media Literacy Education, will take place October 19, 2026, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska. Participants will receive five clock hours for attending the workshop. Hobbs is a leading national authority on media literacy education. She is the author of 12 books and more than 300 scholarly articles, founder and director of the Media Education Lab, and a co-founder of the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). She has also created award-winning K-12 resources designed to help teachers integrate media literacy into their curriculum.
Connecting media literacy to Minnesota standards
The workshop is aligned with the 2020 Minnesota English Language Arts Standards and focuses on the media literacy anchor standards woven throughout all three ELA strands. These include helping students to: access and evaluate information from diverse and credible sources; use and cite sources ethically, including understanding intellectual property rights; and safely access, analyze, and create written, oral, and digital content.
The workshop also provides strong connections to the 2025 Information & Technology Literacy Standards developed by Information & Technology Educators of Minnesota (ITEM). The ITEM standards are organized around four strands: Information Literacy and Research, Digital Citizenship, Technology and Innovation, and Literacy Engagement. Media literacy skills are woven throughout these areas, including evaluating and using information, understanding the responsibilities of creating and sharing digital content, and engaging thoughtfully with information and media.
The workshop is designed not only for ELA and literacy educators and leaders, but also welcomes librarians, media literacy specialists, social studies educators, and anyone who supports media literacy.
