| Length: | 49 minutes |
| Presenter: | Carla Pfahl |
| Description: | In its first year, AskMN: The Librarian Is In, Minnesota’s statewide cooperative digital reference service, accepted over 6,000 questions from Minnesota residents, many from K12 students. Students are heavy users of online reference services such as chat and Instant Messaging. It is 24/7, live, interactive, and they can get an instant response at their point of need. In this one-hour webinar we will look at some actual transcripts with K12 students to determine what makes a successful chat session --whether it is for homework help or work on a research project. Through AskMN students can learn many parts of the research process like how to identify a scholarly resource, perform a search that produces useful results, or how to cite a web source. We will also discuss ways in which media specialists and classroom teachers can introduce this online service to students to get the most use out of AskMN and to ensure that everyone has a positive experience. |

| Description: |
Do you continually try to redirect patrons and students from searching for books on the internet using everyday tools such as Google, Amazon.com, Abebooks, or another search engine to using your in-house online catalog? Did you know that patrons and students can easily find library books from these and other commonly used tools? Did you also know that you can promote your online catalog and library services outside of your own library website - for free? Open WorldCat and WorldCat.org now make it easier than ever for the general public to use tools and search engines most familiar to them to find library items and services. MINITEX staff will take you through the In's and Out's of using and promoting your library materials and services through Open WorldCat and WorldCat.org in this 45 minute webinar. We will discuss what Open WorldCat and WorldCat.org are and how they differ. We will also look at the features and tools of each as well as an online demonstration of how they work and how your patrons and students can use them to find library items. |

| Description: | As the amount of content available online continues to expand at a rapid pace, the way that we have traditionally kept up with personal and professional information will become less and less feasible. In place of the current way of scanning through lists of items visually, we’ll need to create systems to help us manage information automatically – to deliver just the content that is relevant to us and to deliver that content in the way that works best for us. This webinar will provide an introduction to two free 2.0 tools that do that: Yahoo! Pipes and Greasemonkey. |

| Description: |
The Public Library Division (PLD) of the Minnesota Library Association is excited to announce their first statewide webinar, "Minnesota Public Library Budget Shortfalls: A Conversation." There are many in the Minnesota public library community who are struggling with budget shortfalls during these challenging economic times. PLD has invited library directors from various types of public libraries -- large and small, from the metropolitan area and from greater Minnesota to share their ideas. Featured guest speakers are: Audrey Betcher, Rochester Public Library; Pat Conley, Washington County Library; Jennifer Jepsen, Martin County Library; Mary Lukkarila, Cloquet Public Library; Marian Ridge, Kitchigami Regional Library; Kim Edson, Chair of PLD to moderate Each presenter will be addressing the following three questions: 1) What is your organization doing to address shrinking budgets - especially at a time when library use is growing? 2) How have you developed strategic priorities for using the available funding - what to keep/strengthen, what do you let go? 3) Political Capital - How do/did you develop it, when do you spend it? (i.e., How have you established your library's value to the community at a time when there is fierce competition for funding from all of your sources?) MLA's Public Library Division believes this webinar is just the start to an ongoing conversation and a way for our library community to share its collective wisdom. PLD has created an online group to continue and expand the conversation via WebJunction Minnesota at: http://mn.webjunction.org/738. Please join the group, participate, and share with your Minnesota public library community. |

Are you curious about virtual reference? Is your library considering starting a virtual reference service? Is virtual reference right for your library? Virtual Reference is taking root in libraries as the next stage in reference services. Find out what all the hype is about, if it is something you should seriously consider, or just learn what it's all about. MINITEX staff have designed a three-part series that covers virtual reference from concept, approach, administration, policies, marketing, vendor options, to using virtual reference, and much more. The series is broken into three 40-minute webinars, each with its own focus. You can sign up for any or all sessions that are of interest. There is no prerequisite for any session, and you don't have to take them sequentially. Part One, "Setting Up a Service", covers the concept of virtual reference and how it applies to reference services, staffing and training issues, and a look at examples of live chat sessions. |

|---|---|
| Length: | 18 minutes |
| Presenter: | Carla Steinberg Pfahl |
| Description: |
This series of online tutorials are designed to give librarians and library staff a basic understanding of how to set up and use free web tools. Web 2.0 is the concept of web based communities such as social networking sites and wiki pages that encourage collaboration and sharing, online interaction, between users. Sites can be maintained for personal and/or institutional use. Blogs: Blogs have exploded over the last few years. Technorati, http://www.technorati.com/, currently indexes about 71 million blogs. People respond to blogs because it is an open forum for them to publish anything they want. Blogs, on an institutional level, are a great way to begin an online dialog and a wonderful medium to generate discussion and forums of communication. Having a place for interaction gives patrons a voice. It also creates a safe environment where patrons feel like they can express themselves. Libraries can benefit from this by making their online environment feel like a community with contributions from patrons, employees, directors, and board members. They can also receive valuable feedback they might not otherwise obtain through traditional means and without too much effort. |

Wiki pages: A wiki is a website that allows visitors to add, remove, edit and change content, typically without the need for registration. It also allows for linking among any number of pages. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring. It is also a good way to involve staff in contributing to a website with little or no knowledge of coding. As well, librarians have started using wiki pages for course resource pages which allow student to contribute and comment on resources used and found for assignments and research projects. |
