Borrowing libraries request no more than one renewal per item and that lending libraries grant renewals whenever possible.

Best Practices for Lenders

  • Grant renewals whenever possible.
  • Respond to renewal requests daily.
  • If item is not renewable, indicate this on the request slip when shipping item to borrower. Best Practices for Borrowers

Results of the 2009 Best Practices Survey

Most comments regarding renewals in the 2009 best practices survey recommended liberal renewal policies, prompt replies to renewal requests, and an easier way for patrons to request renewals. Representative Comments from 2009 Survey:

  • Make renewals easier.
  • Being flexible for renewal requests, especially if no one within the lending library is requesting the material.
  • Allow longer loan periods, and then not allow renewals – no exceptions – and block requests for the same material from the same patron for 30 days.
  • Replying to renewal requests promptly.
  • Indicate when sending item out, if no renewal is available.
